In his latest show with Tom Sewell, Jake Munro touched on something a lot of people probably haven’t heard about before. Jake refers to James Watson, an American geneticist and molecular biologist who won a Nobel Prize for discovering the double-helix structure of DNA (the three-dimensional, twisted-ladder shape) in 1953. But the same scientific community who showered him with praise later shunned Watson and stripped him of his academic honours, after he repeatedly stated that human intelligence is heavily dictated by genetics, particularly along racial lines. This is interesting for two reasons, firstly because Watson was obviously shunned due to his findings totally disproving human racial equality on the basis of DNA. But secondly, since it’s in our nature to “breed up” (if we can) it explains why those of us who are more in tune with our instincts are so attracted to intelligence, or notable members of the more intelligent races. Watson’s view also indicates it’s wrong to think of intelligence as a purely academic or “institutionally themed” trait (something that must be taught). Meaning the universities could be a complete scam. The proof is in the pudding on this one too, since people who survive the institutions these days tend to be more perfunctorily obsequious and are not necessarily intelligent. But this whole subject matter got me thinking that it may actually explain why women are notoriously attracted to outcasts, criminals and radical entrepreneurs, since these are the kinds of men who often find a way to get what they want without slave-like obedience to the institutions, which is obviously a trait women would be compelled to want to replicate for its usefulness in survival. “Through the discovery of DNA and an ensuing genetic revolution, powers held traditionally to be the exclusive property of the Gods might one day be ours.” James D. Watson

Cashews are a good perspective-giver for how keenly you’re experiencing life. If you don’t eat carbs for a few days cashews will taste really sweet, because your heightened sensitivity to glucose means your taste buds will more easily identify the small amount of sugar in the nuts. Happiness works the same way, our sensitivity to it depends on the rate at which we’re exposed to thrill. The happiest I’ve ever felt in my life was finally arriving at the Melbourne Assessment Prison in 2012. For about a month prior to getting there I’d been kept in police station cells due to prison overcrowding. I’d eaten only two slop microwave meals per day, had seen no sunlight, hadn’t showered, had no change of clothes and shared a holding cell with seven other detainees. We slept on the floor because there weren’t enough plastic pillows for everyone to make beds out of. It’s actually a “human rights violation” to keep people in those conditions for longer than two weeks, but they just move you to a different police station after your two weeks has elapsed, as a loophole to reset the clock. But after arriving at an actual prison, washing, shaving, putting on fresh clothes and sitting outside eating an apple in the sun, that was easily the happiest moment of my life. You could’ve given me a free Bugatti on a regular day said it’s yours to keep, it wouldn’t have compared to how thrilled I felt eating that apple that day. The point is that without abstinence we don’t truly feel, taste or appreciate anything for what it is. Going without even just for a little while dramatically enhances your experiences, gets more carbs into your muscles and just makes life easier to appreciate. That’s what I was thinking about while eating these cashews.
