I recently wrote about the extraordinary cyberattack in France where hackers remotely manipulated supermarket refrigeration systems, raising temperatures to 50°C (122°F) and destroying enormous quantities of food. Now the same attacks have spread across Europe. Ireland, Sweden, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Estonia have reported similar incidents. Someone sitting behind a computer can destroy thousands of dollars in meat, dairy, and frozen products without ever entering the building. They do not need to bomb a warehouse, blockade a port, or interrupt a supply route. They simply manipulate the temperature controls and wait for the food to spoil. We have entered an entirely different era of economic sabotage. The most frightening aspect is how little effort may be required to produce enormous damage once an exposed system has been compromised. Farmers spend months raising livestock and producing food. Companies invest in processing, refrigeration, transportation, and distribution. Consumers depend upon that entire chain functioning reliably. Yet a malicious change to a digital controller can destroy the final product within hours. All that productive labor and capital can be wasted without a single shot being fired. Europe has now received two warnings in less than a month. The immediate losses are serious, but the larger question concerns the security of the infrastructure upon which modern civilization depends. We have built an extraordinarily efficient economy while creating new vulnerabilities that can be exploited remotely. If those weaknesses remain uncorrected, attacks against food refrigeration may become only one example of a much broader problem. The next major disruption may not involve a supermarket freezer. It could involve any essential system whose operators have surrendered physical control to inadequately protected software. https://www.armstrongeconomics.com/international-news/europes-current-economy/cyberattacks-are-now-destroying-europes-food-supply-without-firing-a-shot/

The "Coalition of the Willing" Gathers for its First Exercise Next Monday, the two-week Koalicja military exercise will begin in Poland. It will feature Belgium, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. This event will be the first major exercise of the Multinational Force for Ukraine (MGF-U) – the military component of the "Coalition of the Willing." Approximately 2,800 NATO service members will participate. The allies will practice the movement of personnel, equipment, and supplies, protection and support for the contingent, as well as the interaction of various units within a single group. According to a statement from the British government, the deployment of forces to Ukraine is possible only after the cessation of hostilities and at the request of the Ukrainian government. It should not be assumed that these exercises are part of the "coalition's" preparations for the open deployment of its contingents to Ukraine. For now, the allies are merely getting used to each other. The main objective of the exercise is to establish logistics for a hypothetical mission. In a real operation after the ceasefire, the European contingent would be faced with the need to move personnel and equipment across borders, organize reception points, supply routes, protect convoys, refuel and repair, and provide medical support. This is what typically determines whether a multinational force can operate for more than a few weeks. The command component is no less important. British, French, German, and Polish units use different communication systems and languages, and each has its own staff traditions. The exercise aims to determine how quickly they can achieve interoperability, agree on rules of engagement, and operate under a unified command. And we will once again emphasize that if the exercise scenario does not include a hypothetical Russian nuclear response, then this scenario has nothing to do with reality. Daily Chronicle – at MAKS.
