📢 Liquid Network, a Bitcoin sidechain built by Blockstream, paused operations on Sunday after actors calling themselves white-hat hackers withdrew about 4,000 BTC, roughly $320 million and 95% of its reserves. Three things worth knowing: 1️⃣ The attackers left an on-chain message reading "We are whitehats. Contact us on chain," and told Blockstream they would return most of the funds once the bug is patched. Nothing has come back yet. Blockstream says the cause was a software flaw in Elements, not stolen keys. Bitcoin itself was never touched, only the system that issues Liquid Bitcoin against locked BTC. 2️⃣ Friday's jobs report came in at 162,000 against expectations of 53,000, the strongest since March. But the bigger story was in the revisions. July, which everyone read last month as the month the labor market went into reverse, turned out to be positive after all. June was revised up too. The stalling labor market that traders had been pricing in largely wasn't there. 3️⃣ That reset pushed Fed hike odds higher and Bitcoin below $80,000. US markets are closed today for Labor Day, but the week fills up fast: the ECB is expected to raise rates Thursday, and US inflation lands Friday, the last major print before the Fed meets September 16. 🖥 Bitcoin is up roughly 22% since mid-August, and the companies that mine it have almost entirely missed the move. Three things behind that: 1️⃣ Of eleven mining and mining-adjacent companies tracked by The Block, only one beat Bitcoin over that stretch, and it builds hardware rather than mines. The rest returned a median of 1.8%. Exchanges and stablecoin companies, meanwhile, kept pace with Bitcoin exactly. 2️⃣ The reason is how they funded their pivot. Miners sold between 28,000 and 32,000 Bitcoin in the first half of the year and committed over $70 billion to AI data centers. For three of the largest, computing is now expected to generate around 70% of revenue this year. The bet may still work, but they paid for it by selling the asset that then rallied. 3️⃣ Bitcoin itself slipped below $78,000, a third straight daily decline after failing at $80,000. ETFs saw $120 million leave yesterday, a second consecutive outflow, while ether funds took in $35 million. Miner stocks used to move harder than Bitcoin in both directions. 🟢 Bitcoin recovered to $79,640 overnight after dipping to $77,600 yesterday. Oil is nearing $100 amid escalating strikes in the Gulf, which normally pressures risk assets, yet crypto held up. What's underneath: 1️⃣ More than 71% of all Bitcoin is now sitting in profit. The historical average is 74.7%, and crossing it has usually marked the shift from bear to bull. But there's a catch they point out themselves: more coins in profit also means more people who can sell. That may explain why the push toward $82,000 keeps stalling. Glassnode adds that volatility right now is driven less by leverage or market size and more by who actually holds the coins. 2️⃣ Strategy's return to bitcoin buying lasted exactly one week. Instead of adding more, the company spent $176 million buying back its own preferred shares. Bitmine went the other way, adding 28,086 ETH and moving within reach of 5% of the entire ether supply. 3️⃣ Both Bitcoin and Ether ETFs saw small outflows on Tuesday, around $47 million and $24 million.The thing to watch is whether inflows hold through this week's Treasury buyback and Friday's inflation print. 71% in profit reads bullish until you remember every one of them can sell.
