⚡️🇧🇷 Brazil Election Mayhem: Indigenous communities in Brazil voted in large numbers for Lula. Bolsonaro supporters have spent years taking revenge on them for doing this. During this most recent presidential campaign, things escalated considerably, with reports of political persecution, intimidation, armed attacks and killings across several Indigenous territories. In the Votouro Kaingang territory, in Rio Grande do Sul, residents say a pro-Bolsonaro chief has punished PT voters for years, including by taking away their jobs in village schools and daycare facilities. On October 13, the violence turned deadly. Álvaro Ferreira, 37, was shot and killed, allegedly by the chief, according to witnesses. Two more Indigenous men, Alexandro Brandino, 25, and Silvano Domingos Candoia, 30, were subsequently killed during an intervention by the Military Police's riot-control battalion. At least 15 people were injured. A pregnant Indigenous woman also went into labor amid the violence but was reportedly prevented from leaving the territory to reach medical care. Her baby died before reaching the hospital. Police claim their officers came under fire, while residents dispute that account. Federal authorities are investigating the deaths. In Mato Grosso do Sul, Guarani Kaiowá communities reported pickup trucks circling their territories to intimidate voters, alongside assaults and attempted killings. Following Lula's victory, a leaked audio recording attributed to a municipal employee called for Indigenous PT voters to be killed by poisoning their drinking water. The employee was reportedly suspended, and the threats left some communities afraid to drink water delivered by tanker trucks. Elsewhere, a Funai office in Paraná was attacked with explosives, while journalists obtained recordings of ranchers discussing plans to invade Indigenous territory in Pará around election day. In Yanomami territory, illegal miners reportedly began attempting to reoccupy clandestine airstrips, telling residents that “Bolsonaro's son won, he's already president”, despite Lula's officially confirmed victory. @medmannews

⚡️🇧🇷 Brazil Election Mayhem: Flávio Bolsonaro has long-documented links to Rio de Janeiro's police militias. "Police militias" in Rio are armed groups run by current and former police officers. They seize control of neighborhoods, charge residents for "protection," gas, internet and transport, run land grabs, and kill people who get in the way. They are gangs in everything except name. Flávio Bolsonaro's office employed the mother and former wife of militia boss Adriano da Nóbrega, a former police captain linked to a death squad. Flávio once awarded Nóbrega a medal. During this campaign, the press confirmed more. Flávio signed a 2024 appeal to the high court seeking to keep a police officer out of a jury trial. That officer was accused of killing Ana Clara Gomes Machado, a five-year-old girl, with a rifle while she played outside her home. Flávio represented the accused officer pro bono (no costs). In 2025, Flávio Bolsonaro joined the defense team for four police officers accused of killing four people during an operation in Vidigal. The victims included a doorman and a delivery worker with no criminal records. At the Globo presidential debate, Flávio Bolsonaro defended the police officer accused of killing five-year-old Ana Clara Gomes Machado, directly in front of her mother, Cristiane Gomes da Silva, who was sitting in the audience. He insisted that the officer was innocent, blamed the violence on drug traffickers and claimed the girl had died during a shootout — an account her mother strongly disputed, saying she had witnessed her daughter's death and that no such shootout had occurred. To make matters worse, Flávio addressed the grieving mother by her dead daughter's name, in what critics perceived as a particularly cruel moment. Cristiane later called him a “monster” and accused him of inventing a gunfight rather than explaining why he had chosen to defend the officer. And there is Márcio Canella. Flávio Bolsonaro publicly backed the former mayor of Belford Roxo for the Senate, with his own mother, Rogéria Bolsonaro, initially announced as Canella's first substitute senator. In July, Canella was arrested after Federal Police discovered a restricted rifle in his vehicle. He subsequently abandoned his Senate bid and ran for the Rio de Janeiro state legislature, winning a seat. On October 15, he was arrested again, this time under a Supreme Court preventive detention order. Federal Police investigators identify Canella as a central political operator in a suspected criminal organization involving money laundering through nearly 100 gas stations, corruption, public officials and alleged connections to Rio's militias and the Comando Vermelho criminal faction. The network allegedly moved R$7.6 billion over six years. This is how Trump administration combats criminal organizations, sheltering them. @medmannews
