Gabi Kovalenko's Visit to Walter & Lao Russell’s Home - 100 Years of Legacy, Where Love Never Dies
"I filmed this in Afton, Virginia, at Swannanoa, the former home of Walter and Lao Russell. It became far more emotional than I expected. Being there confronted me with the scale of what two human beings can leave behind when their lives become completely devoted to an idea, to beauty, to one another, and to something much larger than themselves...the field is full of love, but it also evokes deep grief.
Walter Russell was an extraordinary American polymath whose life involved painting, sculpture, architecture, music, philosophy, writing, and an unconventional approach to cosmology. In 1926, he published The Universal One, an ambitious attempt to describe the universe through first principles involving polarity, rhythmic interchange, light, motion, balance, and the relationship between consciousness and creation.
Lao Russell later became his intellectual and spiritual partner, an author and philosopher in her own right, and together they developed the body of work now preserved by the University of Science and Philosophy. Their work has always occupied an unusual territory between cosmology, philosophy, spirituality, art, and questions that conventional disciplines often keep separated.
Swannanoa became part home, part school, part gallery, and part living experiment. Walter's diagrams, sculptures and paintings filled the space. Lao continued tending the work after Walter's death, and their larger philosophy asked people to discover the creative and divine capacities within themselves rather than simply admire theirs.
Standing there a century after "The Universal One" was published, I found myself pondering the continuation of legacy, and this video became a meditation on that question, leading to the responsibility each of us has to become a steward of whatever knowledge, creativity, love, or consciousness is trying to move through us.
Love does not disappear simply because the people who embodied it are gone. When it is invested deeply enough into a life, a relationship, a body of work, a garden, a building, or a powerful idea, it continues to give itself forward. Generations later, someone else can encounter it and become changed by it.
This year marked the 100th anniversary of Walter Russell's The Universal One, published in 1926, and the University of Science and Philosophy gathered for its 2026 Homecoming celebration around that centennial. I was invited to deliver a Keynote, which I titled “Coherence as a Science of Living: Alignment with The Universal One,” exploring what these questions mean now...how coherence appears across nature, biology, consciousness and human systems, what causes it to fracture, and how we can begin creating it within ourselves and our lives.
Next week, I will be sharing the full recording of my presentation here on YouTube.
Walter and Lao spent their lives asking what becomes possible when a human being begins to live in conscious relationship with the deeper order of nature. A century later, perhaps the question belongs to us."
