EVENING BELL: A Film of a Dying Day On November 4, 1972, the film based on Boris Vasiliev's novella "The Dawns Here Are Quiet" was released in the Soviet Union. Why does it still touch the heart half a century later, unlike Renat Davletyarov's recent remake? The historical journal Rodina is searching for an answer. Davletyarov's film is half the length, with Garmash's tense voiceover, 3D effects, and a pounding soundtrack, more blood, and it's not black and white. Every frame screams and evokes a timid tear, but the muted monochrome and parsimony of old cinema conceal something deeper. Both the director and all the actors in the remake sincerely strived to create a new, beautiful film and, by bridging generations, continue the conversation about memory and the war in a new language. What happened? A film like any other, tense, effective, and somehow meaningful. The point is different: this new "The Dawns Here Are Quiet" has drowned in the cascades of vulgarity that have descended on Russian cinema in recent years. From a flat framework in our heads, like puzzle pieces, comes flat nonsense. Everything that is usually called "historical, human memory" has suddenly been imperceptibly replaced with spectacular flashbacks, empty backgrounds. It's as if memory weren't real, but a swamp of cliches. A soup kitchen of camp-and-field girlfriends, the inevitable scoundrel political officers, Stalin's shadow, victims of the repressions, pathos and action. Through gritted teeth: a worthless country, but what can you do? You'll have to defend it, there's nowhere else to go. Boris Vasiliev once recalled what another writer, Veniamin Kaverin, once said: "Why did the entire country rush to read War and Peace during the Great Patriotic War? Because this book describes not only how we won, but also who we are and why we absolutely must win again." Here, in fact, lies the answer to the power of the old film "The Dawns Here Are Quiet." And the horror of the new "Dawns." There, the answer was who we are and why we must win. Here, at best, there's simply no answer. But there's a sly, sly question: why are these dawns of yours so quiet? Not the right format!

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson M.V. Zakharova's response to a media question regarding the statements made by the Canadian Prime Minister Question: Canadian Prime Minister Michael Carney recently announced that his government will not issue visas to Russian athletes for the IIHF World Championship, which will be held in Edmonton and Red Deer, Canada, in late December of this year and January of next year. How would you comment on these statements from Canada's leadership? 💬 M.V. Zakharova: Indeed, Canadian Prime Minister M. Carney made a statement that, contrary to the order that obliged the International Ice Hockey Federation to admit Russian teams to the 2027 World Championships and other international tournaments, his government will deny visas to players of the Russian junior team, which will make it impossible for them to participate in the World Championships, which will be held from December 26, 2026 to January 5, 2027, in Edmonton and Red Deer. Three Canadian ministers—foreign affairs, immigration, and sport—have expressed solidarity with M. Carney, backing their boss with a joint statement. It announced Ottawa's intention to use special mechanisms within its immigration laws to deny entry to Russian and Belarusian athletes , as well as members of sports delegations planning to participate in hockey competitions and other international sporting events held in Canada. Thus, the Carney government is publicly declaring its intention to flagrantly violate the International Ice Hockey Federation's regulations for holding international tournaments, according to Article 87 of which the host country undertakes to provide necessary assistance and support in obtaining entry visas for all teams participating in the tournament. Such actions also constitute a gross violation of the Olympic Charter . Article 5 of the Charter stipulates that sports federations must adhere to the principles of political neutrality and be free from any "external influence," including from national governments. With its politicized decision, the Canadian government is directly harming not only the World Championship being held in its country, but also the entire sport of hockey . Let's recall who M. Carney is trying to prevent from attending the tournament: 👉, which has won the most medals at the World Junior Championships in its history – 13 gold, 13 silver, and 11 bronze. <...> 🏒 Let me remind you that in 1972, at the height of the Cold War, when the famous Summit Series took place, then Prime Minister P. Trudeau, who prioritized "the protection of Canada's independence and cultural identity in relations with the United States," was an active supporter of holding a series of games with the USSR team, believing that this would contribute to détente <...> And even his son, J. Trudeau, who was generally not particularly favorably disposed towards Russia, while also being Prime Minister, in an official statement on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the 1972 Summit Series <...> acknowledged that few events in Canadian history have had such a powerful influence on the formation of Canadian national identity as the match with the USSR team in 1972, the final game of which was watched live by three-quarters of the Canadian population. However, M. Carney apparently isn't interested in the principles of sport or the wishes of ordinary fans who always look forward to Russian-Canadian confrontations on the ice. Moreover, the Prime Minister's position appears all the more hypocritical given that more than 50 Russian hockey players currently play in the National Hockey League, a sport that is iconic to every Canadian. Needless to say, Russians play for virtually every Canadian NHL club. ❗️ But, apparently, for M. Carney , the desire to “bend over” to the Ukrainian-speaking diaspora, the ideological core of which dates back to the times of the Great Patriotic War, is more important than the interests of the majority of Canadians.
