🇺🇸 Midterms wipeout 🇭🇺 Orban losing 🇧🇷 Bolsonaro losing to an 81 year old socialist 🇬🇧 Labour now leading Reform 10 points in polling 🇳🇱 Geert Wilders losing a third of his vote share Everywhere the slopulist right is taking a drubbing. These people have nothing to offer young people, no vision, no economic promises beyond protecting boomer pensions and property prices. The only pitch to anyone else has been fear of the left and mass-immigration and it's failed to hold back either. One of the only exceptions to this trend is the AfD, who responded to the Iran War and Greenland nonsense by reasserting German sovereignty, while Farage was begging his government to let America use British bases for the Purim war. The right can't win with these people in charge. It needs to do what the left did in the 1960s and be taken over by young radicals who totally rebuild intellectually. Will we find the human capital to do that? For years the right has selected for vapid, fame hungry influencers and mindless shills, and the average right winger's brain has been so fried by conspiratorialism they can hardly think. It will be tough, but regardless of what comes next, the vision of the establishment right has already lost.

What struck me was that, even though nationalism has been the natural state of politics for millennia, it is barely discussed in university courses on political philosophy or political history—and when it is, it’s often through lies that can easily be dismantled in a single lecture, as Keith Woods intelligently demonstrated.

While this will be led by left wing pseudo-nationalists and opposed by the British right, I maintain that it would be a good thing for all the composite nations of the UK. The United Kingdom as an entity structurally stifles ethnonationalism, has successfully recast Britishness as a civic umbrella term, and the electoral arithmetic allows Scotland and Wales to undermine a right wing English majority. Celtic nationalism is also incentivised to stay left-wing as long as it casts itself as representing peripheries against a conservative English majority. Breaking up the Union allows parties like the Scottish National Party to face a populist nationalist challenge, and would make it easier for rightist party to secure a majority in England.
