Australian Companies Face Sharp Profit Downgrades Profit forecasts for Australia’s largest companies are being slashed at the fastest rate since the COVID-19 pandemic, as aggressive interest rate rises from the Reserve Bank of Australia threaten to push the economy into a downturn. A wave of earnings downgrades, which began in June, intensified through the annual general meeting season in September and October. Market consensus now expects company earnings on the S&P/ASX 200 Index to grow by less than 7 per cent for the current financial year, a significant drop from the nearly 13 per cent growth forecast just four months ago, according to UBS. This sharp deceleration mirrors the period when COVID-19 fears gripped markets in March 2020 https://www.sharecafe.com.au/2026/11/04/australian-companies-face-sharp-profit-downgrades/

Brazil's central bank is expected to halt its easing cycle on November 4 after a market sell-off that followed President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's re-election pushed up inflation forecasts. Lula and his allies, meanwhile, are resisting pressure for tougher spending cuts. Policymakers began a two-day meeting on November 3, and the decision is seen as an early test of how the October 25 election has changed the rate outlook, Reuters reported. The bank has cut the benchmark Selic rate by 25 basis points at each of its last five meetings, to 13.75%. A Reuters poll found 33 of 48 economists expected the central bank to hold the rate at 13.75%, with median forecasts showing it unchanged until the second quarter of 2027. https://www.intellinews.com/brazil-central-bank-set-to-pause-rate-cuts-as-post-election-rout-clouds-outlook-481736/

Ringgit closes higher vs US dollar ahead of BNM OPR decision The Malaysian ringgit strengthened against the US dollar and other ASEAN currencies, supported by expectations that Bank Negara Malaysia will maintain the Overnight Policy Rate at 2.75% during its policy meeting. Analysts predict consistent economic growth and manageable inflation, with headline inflation remaining within 1.5% to 2.5%. Additionally, Democratic gains in the US Mid-Term Elections bolstered the ringgit by decreasing prospects of US fiscal expansion, affecting Treasury yields and the US dollar. Despite these gains, further appreciation may depend on market perceptions of US Federal Reserve interest rate decisions. https://www.malaymail.com/news/money/2026/11/04/ringgit-closes-higher-vs-us-dollar-ahead-of-bnm-opr-decision/241990

ON THIS DAY : Iran Hostage Crisis In 1979, a year of enormous social unrest in Iran came to a head with the collapse of the country's monarchy and the establishment by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini of an Islamic Republic. Iran went from being a pro-Western, American-backed nation to one of its arch enemies. This new state of affairs is best symbolized by the 444-day hostage crisis at the US Embassy in Tehran. On November 4, 1979, students broke through the gates of the compound and took most of the staff hostage. Six who had evaded capture were rescued by a Canadian-American effort in early 1980. https://x.com/Ldyheart/status/2117942586837004484?a=0PkaaZoTjSxux7X21FQ&s=20
