Meet Sam Bankman-Fried, or as everyone called him, SBF. In 2019, this lanky 21-year-old founded FTX, a cryptocurrency derivatives exchange. By 2022, it was valued at $32 billion. He was worth $26 billion on paper. He was TIME Magazine's cover story. He was funding Democratic politicians, backing climate initiatives, and positioning himself as crypto's responsible adult.
Here's where it gets wild.
In November 2022, a CoinDesk investigation revealed FTX was secretly propping up its sister company, Alameda Research, with billions in customer deposits. Within days, the exchange collapsed. Customers couldn't withdraw their funds. The company filed for bankruptcy. Eight billion dollars in customer assets vanished.
By December 2022, SBF was arrested in the Bahamas. Prosecutors painted him as a fraudster who knowingly stole customer money to gamble on risky bets and finance his political ambitions.
In November 2023, he was convicted on seven counts of wire fraud and conspiracy. In November 2024, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
The lesson? Charisma, innovation, and good PR can mask deception. The biggest scams don't always look like scams until they do. And in crypto — where you're supposed to verify everything — many people just believed the hype.
