The cryptocurrency exchange Bitget suffered a major security breach, which has since been confirmed as the largest crypto heist of 2026 so far. Initially reported at $351.6 million, Bitget later revised its loss estimate upward to $387.5 million after uncovering additional unauthorized transfers involving Zcash and TRON. Bitget CEO Gracy Chen confirmed that preliminary investigations strongly point to state-sponsored North Korean hackers. Investigators traced IP addresses used in the breach to VPN services previously utilized by known North Korean cybercrime groups, and noted the attack method matches past DPRK operations. Attackers did not steal private keys. Instead, they breached a critical backend wallet system to spoof transaction data, tricking the exchange's internal authorization-signing process into draining its "hot" and "warm" online wallets. Offline cold wallets remained completely secure.
